Flying into Catania you’ll be privately transferred to your boutique property on the slopes of Mount Etna.
Kick off your adventure right away with an easy guided trek. Setting off from home base, you’ll hike along a trail through hazelnut groves and reach a nearby village.
A fabulous dinner and excellent wines await you once back to your home on Etna.
Tomorrow you’ll go on a beautiful trek along the craters of the largest eruption of the last few decades. You’ll cross the flow of the lava from some old side craters on a fascinating walk that takes you along the lava flow channel, a deep canyon cut by the enormous magmatic mass that invaded and partially destroyed the centuries-old pinewood.
You’ll see one of Etna’s longest lava flow tunnels and continue to a beechwood and pine forest. Great scenario for a grigliata (BBQ) and some off-road fun on quad bikes.
Helmet, wetsuit and safety jacket on, this morning you’ll go rafting in a unique canyon of basaltic lava, shaped over thousands of years by the waters of the Alcantara river. We’ll start our adventure going up a stretch of the river channeled into an imposing basalt gorge more than 30 meters high, making our way through some small rapids, jumping into the water and at times swimming. Then, we’ll start the descent using our body as a raft through the rapids with splashes, slides, adrenaline and plenty of fun.
Now you deserve a bit of relaxation, a generous lunch in a winery, with some good wine while going through the photos and videos we shot at the gorges.
Tonight dine in the nearby village on some authentic regional food -think grilled meat, sausages and country recipes.
Today is the day you’ll conquer the summit craters.
After a hearty breakfast, get your hiking boots on, you have a 3300 mt active volcano to climb! We get to 2500 mt by cable car, then by special 4WD vehicles up to 2900 and from there we start hiking to the summit craters. It’s hard but it’s well worth it. Arriving at the top is an overwhelming emotional experience. Were heaven and hell so close? Feeling like intruders and as small as ants in front of such a power, we tiptoe along the edge of the smoking mouth of the central crater, hearing “her” voice and keeping an eye out for bursting bubbles and yellow sulphur stones.
It’s downhill time and it will be a fun way down along the crater wall and the steep return path over ash and volcanic scoria, back to 2500 mt where the cable car awaits us.
The home chef is well prepared: your farewell dinner must be as epic as your day.
